Five for Friday January 26: Celebrating Success in Advancing Medication Use Quality

PQA has released a third edition of the PQA Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Resource Guide, which profiles 40 SDOH services, including eight new services and updates to 10 initiatives from the previous two editions.

The guide covers services that address at least one of seven SDOH barriers, plus expands the number of interventions that focus on food and nutrition. It also highlights tactics employed by successful SDOH programs. Learn more about the latest SDOH guide below.

We also highlight our members' perspectives on health equity, the role of managed care, access and affordability in specialty pharmacy. If you have news you'd like for us to spotlight in an upcoming Five For Friday, send us an email!

Advancing Health Equity for Patients with Chronic Disease

Pharmacists are well positioned to advance health equity for persons from racial and ethnic minority groups experiencing chronic disease, according to a research poster presented by CDC staff. The key is providing tailored, and culturally and linguistically appropriate, care, leveraging resources made available through established community relationships with other health care team members, and taking advantage of training to further increase learning about health equity and the obstacles that bar it.

Explaining the Role of Managed Care Pharmacy
PQA Board Chair and AMCP CEO Susan Cantrell details the “Access, Affordability, and Outcomes: The Value of Managed Care Pharmacy” report. Ensuring that Americans can obtain the treatments they need fits firmly within the responsibilities of managed care pharmacy. In 2021, 85% of Medicaid beneficiaries were in some type of managed care. Given the high costs of the most innovative treatments, managed care pharmacists are essential in ensuring appropriate and equitable prescription drug use.

Addressing Access and Affordability in Specialty Pharmacy
Sheila Arquette, President and CEO of NASPprovides a 2024 outlook for specialty pharmacy. Scientific innovation and medical advancements allow us to live longer, healthier lives, but the ethical and financial challenges caused by access and affordability issues necessitate crucial conversations about how health care is delivered. It is critical that all specialty pharmacy industry stakeholders work collaboratively to advance and enhance patient care.

Third Edition of the SDOH Resource Guide

The third edition of the PQA Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Resource Guide takes a closer look at food and nutrition security. We know that individuals without reliable access to affordable, nutritious food are more likely to encounter challenges related to medication access and outcomes of medication therapy.

Throughout developing the guide, we have identified several tactics among successful initiatives, such as community partnerships, training, and cultural sensitivity. These tactics can be considered by those developing their own SDOH programs and are testaments to the power of innovation, adaptability and unwavering dedication to improving the quality of medication use.

PQA welcomes feedback on the guide and suggestions on SDOH services, which can be highlighted in future editions. Feedback can be provided to PQA by email at [email protected]
