Understanding U.S. Medication Use Patterns

Last year saw total U.S. prescription medicine use rise by 1.7%, which came out to a staggering 215 billion days of therapy on daily doses, according to IQVIA’s Understanding the Use of Medicines in the U.S. 2025 report. Medicare beneficiary use of medicines is at an all-time high, but some patients see out-of-pocket cost reductions. In 2024, fewer Medicare patients paid more than $3,500 in annual out-of-pocket costs as Medicare Part D redesign began and average insulin out-of-pocket costs have declined significantly due to $35 caps.

Advocating for Pharmacy's Transformation
Incoming NACDS Board Chair Rick Gates of Walgreens spoke candidly about the need for urgent innovation, noting, “Pharmacies can no longer simply dispense drugs; we must become comprehensive health and wellness destinations that balance offering personalized, in-person care and front of store needs while offering the convenience of digital-forward solutions… Together, we’ve got a real opportunity to reimagine the retail pharmacy model, so it’s better for our customers, our teams and our communities..

Addressing Loneliness to Improve Adherence
Specialty pharmacy experts from Pleio discuss how emotional support, addressing patient loneliness, and peer-to-patient programs can significantly improve medication adherence and patient care. A Pleio study revealed that 75% of patients with chronic conditions experience loneliness, which impacts their health behaviors and medication routines. The conversation emphasized the importance of peer-to-patient support programs, with 80% of patients believing such programs could improve their health management.

Network and Collaborate at the Industry Showcase

The 2025 PQA Annual Meeting is just 10 days away, but there is still time to register! PQA is very intentional when we develop the agenda to ensure attendees are given ample opportunities to network throughout the meeting.

Many of these networking opportunities will take place in the Industry Showcase, a key component of the PQA Annual Meeting. This showcase features a diverse range of organizations from across health care, providing a unique platform for networking, collaboration, and learning. Thank you to our sponsors and exhibitors.
