Five for Friday November 1: Celebrating Success in Advancing Medication Use Quality
We are excited to host members next week at the 2024 PQA Leadership Summit and PQA Convenes: Quality Medication Use in Rare Disease at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel in Arlington, Va. This year's summit will focus on PQA's recent and ongoing work to develop standard pharmacy quality measures.
There is still time for members to join us at both events! PQA Convenes will start at 8:00 a.m. ET on Thursday, November 7, and the summit starts later that day at 3:00 p.m. ET. Learn more about the summit and PQA Convenes t below.
We also highlight our members' perspectives on health outcomes, oral oncolytics and vaccination recommendations. If you have news you'd like for us to spotlight in an upcoming Five For Friday, send us an email!
-- Lisa Hines, PharmD, CPHQ, Chief Quality and Innovation Officer
Chris Stidman, president of OptumRx, a UnitedHealth Group subsidiary, recently addressed how pharmacists are an integral part of a patient’s care journey, providing clinical expertise and support that improves medication adherence, increases access to medication and advances health outcomes. Over the last decade, pharmacists’ responsibilities have grown to include patient education, initiating therapies, and in some states, prescribing rights. These abilities help to achieve optimal health outcomes, improve quality and safety, and ensure continuity of care.
Monitoring Oral Chemotherapy Outcomes
A new study by specialty pharmacists from Vanderbilt Specialty Pharmacy detailed that a tailored clinical monitoring schedule focused on oral oncolytics with high rates of adverse events (AEs) slashed treatment interruptions by more than 50% and significantly reduced medication-related hospitalizations. “Based on this specific drug’s side effect profile and monitoring scheme, how do we best follow up with the patient to optimize adherence?”
Reviewing Vaccination Recommendations
Stanford Health Care's David Ha presented at this year’s NCPA Annual Meeting and Exposition a comprehensive overview of vaccines for four common respiratory viruses and touched on the latest updates from the October 2024 CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices meeting. In a second session, he reviewed the latest updates on vaccines for meningococcal disease, human papillomavirus, and tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis, among others.
The 2024 PQA Leadership Summit will focus on pharmacy measure use in value-based arrangements and quality improvement programs. We are excited that over 90 organizations are attending! You will not want to miss out!
