Five for Friday October 4: Celebrating Success in Advancing Medication Use Quality

PQA is developing a set of standard pharmacy performance measures that would be appropriate for pharmacy quality assessment. As part of this work, PQA has launched a proof-of-concept pilot using several PQA pharmacy measure concepts to evaluate the effectiveness of pharmacies in improving adult immunization rates through value-based arrangements (VBA) with payers.

Working with four leading national organizations, we are testing the feasibility of novel measure concepts and generating much-needed evidence on the effectiveness of payer-pharmacy- arrangements as a tool to assess gaps and improve immunization rates. The pilot will be part of panel discussions at the 2024 PQA Leadership Summit, November 7-8, in Arlington, Va. Learn more about the pilot and the summit below

We also highlight our members' perspectives on adherence to HIV care, pharmacy alternatives, and engaging high-risk patients. If you have news you'd like for us to spotlight in an upcoming Five For Friday, send us an email

Improving Adherence and Access to HIV Care

Jennifer Cocohoba, from the University of California, San Francisco, School of Pharmacydiscusses the benefits of pharmacy-administered long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy for HIV and patient attitudes toward pharmacy-administered treatment. Cocohoba’s research focuses on the use of medications in people with HIV, and pharmacy-based interventions to improve adherence and access to antiretrovirals.

Offering Pharmacy Alternatives for Patients
Vin Gupta, chief medical officer at Amazon Pharmacydetails the company’s efforts to reinvent retail pharmacy. Gupta addresses the recent expansion of same-day prescription delivery to the New York and Los Angeles markets; the benefits of making RxPass available to Prime members on Medicare; and Amazon’s work with Eli Lilly on the latter’s direct-to-consumer initiative.

Engaging High-risk, Hard to Reach Patients
AdhereHealth implemented a coordinated, data-driven engagement strategy for a 10,000-member cohort from a national MA plan that had been considered “unengaged” for 6 to 18 months. By focusing on relationship-building, understanding SDOH barriers, and actively resolving concerns to promote ongoing adherence, AdhereHealth achieved a 65% engagement rate, contributing to the plan’s success in exceeding Star Ratings goals

PQA Evaluating Pharmacy Impact on Immunization Assessment and Gap Closure

As value-based arrangements (VBAs) between payers and pharmacies continue to proliferate, standardized pharmacy quality measures are vital to ensure programs work as intended for payers, pharmacies, and, most importantly, patients. The 2024 PQA Leadership Summit will focus on the recent and ongoing work to develop standard pharmacy quality measures.

PQA has launched a proof-of-concept pilot using several PQA pharmacy measure concepts to evaluate the effectiveness of pharmacies in improving adult immunization rates through VBA with payersThe pilot will be part of panel discussions at the summit. In addition to the immunization pilots,  summit panels and discussions will also address work on blood pressure and hemoglobin A1C improvement and control, and specialty pharmacy turnaround time. Learn more about these projects ahead of the summit and make plans to join us.

Attendance at the summit is an exclusive benefit of PQA membership, and there is no registration fee. We encourage members to register by October 11. Please send questions about registration to [email protected].
