We also highlight our members' perspectives on diabetes interventions, prescription drug pricing, and pre-deductible coverage. If you have news you'd like for us to spotlight in an upcoming Five For Friday, send us an email!
-- Amanda Ryan, PharmD, BCGP, CPHQ, Director of Education
UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy's Jon Easter discussed the best ways to support community pharmacists in building effective, sustainable diabetes interventions in community pharmacy settings. "We’ve been doing diabetes interventions in pharmacy for a long time—and we’re really good at it. We achieve better outcomes: We see lower costs and we see better clinical outcomes."
Balancing Prescription Drug Pricing
PQA Board Chair Susan Cantrell, CEO of AMCP, surveyed the complex landscape around prescription drug pricing. "Our members do take into consideration economic elements, as those elements drive decision-making; but the overarching goal is to make sure patients can get the therapies they need at an affordable cost."
Expanding Pre-deductible Coverage Improves Medication Adherence
A study, funded in part by Johnson & Johnson, finds that expanded pre-deductible coverage in HSA-eligible health plans improves medication adherence. By 2022, there was a noticeable rebound in medication adherence. Specifically, the percentage of enrollees with diabetes using insulin rose by 4 percentage points, while those using statins for heart disease or diabetes saw a 1 percentage point increase.
PQA invites breakout session and poster abstract proposals for the 2025 PQA Annual Meeting. A broad range of topics will be presented during breakout sessions and poster presentations at the 2025 PQA Annual Meeting, which will take place in Tampa, Fla., May 19-21.
