Five for Friday July 12: Celebrating Success in Advancing Medication Use Quality
PQA published the Strategies to Expand Value-Based Pharmacist-Provided Care Action Guide five years ago. The guide was designed to spark conversation and foster collaboration between community pharmacy organizations, pharmacists and health care payers.
I was honored to manage the task force that informed the report, and in a new blog, I reflect on the guide’s impact and share my perspective on the collaborations that continue to shape pharmacist-provided care. Learn more and access the blog and guide below.
We also highlight our members' perspectives on health disparities, diabetes and drug shortages.. If you have news you'd like for us to spotlight in an upcoming Five For Friday, send us an email!

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted our nation’s long-standing disparities and inequities in health status and access to health care services. A November 2020 JMCP article analyzed disparities in medication use (DMU) and offered four suggestions for the managed care pharmacy community to help eliminate DMU. In a new viewpoint, PQA Board Chair and AMCP CEO Susan Cantrell assesses progress that has been made in addressing medication-related disparities..
Addressing Diabetes Stubborn Prevalence
Retailers and suppliers discussed in a recent virtual roundtable how pharmacists and the newest technologies can address the disease’s stubborn prevalence. Technologies and products can help stem nationwide increases in diabetes and prediabetes. Participants included CVS Health, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Thrifty White Pharmacy, Health Mart, and Cencora's Good Neighbor Pharmacy.
Addressing Drug Shortages
Cencora and IQVIA joined a discussion in Washington, D.C., on the pharmaceutical supply chain with government leaders, supply chain experts, health care providers and physicians. The event explored the collective goal of preventing drug shortages and, when they are unavoidable, mitigating their impact on patients. Read more about their insights on the causes of drug shortages and potential solutions.
Through convening events, research, pilots and work to develop standard pharmacy quality measures, PQA has been a national leader in advancing pharmacist-provided care. A 2018 PQA-convened task force identified 15 strategies to expand value-based pharmacist-provided care, which forms the centerpiece of the 2019 Strategies to Expand Value-Based Pharmacist-Provided Care Action Guide.
Pharmacist-provided care can transform the pharmacist’s role in healthcare from a medication dispenser to an indispensable clinical care team member, who provides affordable, accessible and high-quality healthcare services that improve patient outcomes.
Revisit the guide in a new Q&A with PQA's Loren Kirk, who also shares his perspective on the collaborations that continue to shape pharmacist-provided care.
