Five for Friday February 23: Celebrating Success in Advancing Medication Use Quality

PQA is working with its members and the broader medication therapy management (MTM) community to build consensus on the research, measurement and strategies needed to evolve our national approach to evaluating MTM service quality.

Join us next Thursday, February 29, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. ET., for a PQA webinar on finalizing a Call to Action to Advance the Quality of Medication Therapy Management. Learn more below.

We also highlight our members' perspectives on improving medication adherence for those with mental illness, SDOH in the health ecosystem and the Health Equity Index. If you have news you'd like for us to spotlight in an upcoming Five For Friday, send us an email!

Improving Adherence for Those With Mental Illness

According to a recent study, an innovative program from Kaiser Permanente promotes behaviors that protect health for people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Telehealth visits with a specially trained pharmacist resulted in better medication adherence and diabetes screening for people with serious mental illness who are enrolled. Program pharmacists work closely with the patient’s psychiatrist in a collaborative care model.

Navigating Health Equity in the Health Ecosystem
PRECISIONvalue discusses the importance of SDOH in the health ecosystem; examines the impact of standardized measures in regulatory settings; reviews current, relevant quality measures pertinent to hospitals and health plans; and suggests steps stakeholders can take to incorporate SDOH and health equity initiatives into systemic practice. Part of the column emphasizes the significance of accreditation in addressing health disparities and promoting equity.

Highlighting the Impact of the Health Equity Index
Kempton Presley, Chief Strategy Officer of AdhereHealth, highlights how the need for health equity spans the entire health care ecosystem, including the Medicare Advantage (MA) population. Neutralizing social determinants of health (SDOH) barriers and well-informed adherence strategies help MA plans navigate new CMS measurement frameworks, like the Health Equity Index.

Advancing the Quality of MTM Services

Informed by a robust environmental scan, and a November 2 national convening event, PQA has drafted a call to action that includes eight elements. Together, they represent a broad range of actions that can advance the quality of MTM services.

This public webinar will review a draft call to action to advance the quality of MTM services, following the December 11-January 12 public comment period. PQA staff will review the comments received and the work to finalize the call to action. PQA will publish a report in April with the final call to action.

See our blog for more details on this initiative, and register to join us for the webinar.
