February PQA Lecture Series will Examine Use of Registries in Advancing Quality

On February 4, 2010 the PQA Quality Forum Lecture Series, will address "The Role of Registries as a Systematic Quality Improvement Tool” presented by Dr. Bruce Bagley, MD.  For this presentation he will focus on the value of registries in improving the efficiency of care and quality outcomes, particularly in managing patients with chronic illnesses.

Dr. Bagley is the Medical Director for Quality Improvement for the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). The AAFP represents more than 94,000 family physicians, family practice residents and medical students nationwide. His current responsibilities with the AAFP include liaison work with other national organizations in the quality arena and active participation in the development, deployment and implementation of performance measures as well as providing clinical oversight for quality improvement programs and products developed by the AAFP. Dr. Bagley has spoken extensively on the topics of performance measurement, office redesign, electronic health records and leadership. He is a 2005-6 Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award examiner.

The Mission of the PQA is to:


Improve the quality of medication use across health care settings through a collaborative process in which key stakeholders agree on a strategy for measuring and reporting performance information related to medications.

PQA, Inc.

 

PQA, Inc., a pharmacy quality alliance, is a collaborative initiative involving all interested organizations and stakeholders that are committed to the mission of the PQA.

PQA is led by a Board of Directors committed to improving health care quality and patient safety and pharmacy practice.

The Workgroups


All related work of the PQA will be done in three key workgroups: Communications & Education, Quality Metrics, and Research Coordinating Council. Each workgroup will be chaired by an appointed member of one of the steering organizations.

Communications & Education Workgroup

This workgroup is responsible for the development of educational programming for pharmacists about quality measurement and quality improvement, and the impact it will have on them as frontline practitioners in their practice settings. The workgroup will be comprised of representatives from all PQA members. Smaller subgroups will focus on specific communication or education needs of a particular pharmacy segment.

This workgroup will also be responsible for developing a plan for increasing awareness of PQA initiatives amongst healthcare decision-makers, clinicians and the public.

Quality Metrics Workgroup

The Quality Metrics Workgroup will be responsible for identifying the areas of measurement development and work with organizations who have a demonstrated expertise in the design and specifications of performance measures.

PQA Research Coordinating Council

This workgroup is comprised of 15 members and two co-chairs and includes researchers, pharmacist practitioners, associates from drug plans, employers and data aggregators.  The group will monitor existing demonstration projects, develop plans for expansion of demonstration projects, guide activities of PQA as it seeks external grant support, and will also identify research priorities and initiatives for PQA.  The Research Coordinating Council will also server as a coordinating/oversight body for demonstration projects.

Membership applications for the PQA are available on this website. A dues structure for membership is found on page two of the membership application. When an organization's membership dues are received, this will entitle an organization to name up to four individuals to participate in the three workgroups within the PQA.
