Proper disposal of unused or unwanted medications has receiv ed attention recently, due in part to the opioid epidemic. This Quality For um webinar will explore two models aimed at increasing safe medication disp osal.
The state of Iowa recently began a n
ovel program where patients or caregivers can go into any participating com
munity pharmacy and request a drug disposal kit at no cost. Mi
tchell Barnett, Associate Director of the Iowa Prescription Monitoring Prog
ram, and Leslie Herron, owner of Sumpter Pharmacy, will discuss how pharmac
ists can assess their current workflow and patient interaction, utilize inf
ormation on safe medication disposal, and engage with their patients in mor
e meaningful conversation about the potential dangers associated with opioi
ds.
Education about the safe use, storage, and disp
osal of leftover opioids along with the provision of an in-home opioid disp
osal product is critical in the perioperative period. John M.
Edwards, from Baptist Health Lexington, will review the current literature
related to the use of in-home products to enhance opioid disposal after sur
gical procedures.
