PQA Quality Forum: Engaging Pharmacy and Healthcare Stakeholders in Safe Medication Disposal
Thursday, April 21, 2022, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT
Category: Education

Proper disposal of unused or unwanted medications has received attention recently, due in part to the opioid epidemic. This Quality Forum webinar will explore two models aimed at increasing safe medication disposal.

The state of Iowa recently began a novel program where patients or caregivers can go into any participating community pharmacy and request a drug disposal kit at no cost. Mitchell Barnett, Associate Director of the Iowa Prescription Monitoring Program, and Leslie Herron, owner of Sumpter Pharmacy, will discuss how pharmacists can assess their current workflow and patient interaction, utilize information on safe medication disposal, and engage with their patients in more meaningful conversation about the potential dangers associated with opioids.

Education about the safe use, storage, and disposal of leftover opioids along with the provision of an in-home opioid disposal product is critical in the perioperative period. John M. Edwards, from Baptist Health Lexington, will review the current literature related to the use of in-home products to enhance opioid disposal after surgical procedures.
