Five for Friday November 21: Celebrating Success in Advancing Medication Use Quality

Welcome to Five For Friday!

PQA will launch a new Patient Advisory Council in 2026. This council will advise PQA on what matters most to patients, their families and caregivers as it relates to safe, effective and appropriate medication use. PQA invites patients, caregivers, and patient advocates to consider submitting nominations.

Individuals at PQA member organizations, across all sectors, who work in a patient engagement role as it relates to quality improvement, are also invited to apply. Self-nominations to participate on the council are being accepted through Friday, December 12. Learn more below.

We also highlight our members' perspectives on patient access, whole patient care and diabetes management. If you have news you'd like for us to spotlight in an upcoming Five For Friday, send us an email!

Accelerating Patient Access to Therapy

CoverMyMeds' Megan Wetzel shares how the right field reimbursement model structure ensures field teams have the insights and tools they need to overcome coverage barriers and accelerate patient access to therapy. Ultimately, she says, you want a model that fits however it's going to be easiest to get that patient on therapy, depending on what your coverage barriers may be and what your process barriers may be.

Advancing Whole Patient Care with VBAs
Milliman's Jennifer Cruz says GLP-1s — and diabetes management in general — are an area where pharmacy benefit managers and health plans are negotiating value-based contracts that take into account both the pharmacy and medical benefits and how increased spending under the pharmacy benefit may be offset by decreased spending on the medical. The value-based contracts tend to be layered on to other contracts.

Reducing HbA1c Through Diabetes Management
pharmacist-managed diabetes care program reduced hemoglobin A1c levels from approximately 9.4% at baseline to 6.7% at “graduation,” according to the results of a poster presented at the ASHP Pharmacy Futures 2025 meeting. The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy's Kathleen Pincus provides comments on the results, noting the benefits of having pharmacists involved in diabetes care in the ambulatory/primary care setting.

Nominations Being Accepted for New PQA Patient Advisory Council

Patients, caregivers, family members and advocates have a critical role to play in high-quality medication use. The new Patient Advisory Council will support PQA’s mission and enhance the organization’s work to advance quality medication use for a person-centered and value-based health care system

Self-nominations to participate on the council are being accepted today through Friday, December 12. Individuals can submit their nominations via this form.  Appointments are for a two-year term with the opportunity for extensions.

The council will consist of up to 20 individuals who are patients, caregivers, family members or patient advocates. Individuals will be notified by December 22 of their status, and the 2026 meeting schedule will be established in January

We are excited about establishing this new council, which will enhance how PQA incorporates the patient voice across our work. If you have any questions, contact us at [email protected].
