Nominations Are Being Accepted for a New PQA Patient Advisory Council

PQA, the Pharmacy Quality Alliance, will launch a new Patient Advisory Council in 2026. This council will advise PQA on what matters most to patients, their families and caregivers as it relates to safe, effective and appropriate medication use.

The council also will provide input on strategies to meaningfully incorporate patient perspectives throughout PQA’s work to improve the quality of medication use and patient outcomes.

Self-nominations to participate on the council are being accepted today through Friday, December 12. Individuals can submit their nominations via this form.

PQA invites patients, caregivers, and patient advocates to consider submitting nominations. Individuals at PQA member organizations, across all sectors, who work in a patient engagement role as it relates to quality improvement, are also invited to apply.

The Critical Role of Patients, Caregivers and Advocates in Quality

Patients, caregivers, family members and advocates have a critical role to play in high-quality medication use. They provide unique and valuable insights about what is important and meaningful in medication use quality, which supports the development of appropriate and useful quality measures, as well as related education, research and tools that support informed health care decisions and better medication use outcomes.

The council’s work supports PQA’s mission and enhances the organization’s work to advance quality medication use for a person-centered and value-based health care system.

The Council’s Role and Our Support for Council Members

As an advisory body, the council’s input and recommendations will be shared with and considered by PQA staff to inform its work. Specifically, the council will:

  • Receive updates on PQA’s measurement, research and education activities and provide feedback on the work’s person-centeredness and integration of patient perspectives.
  • Provide counsel on how PQA identifies, engages and supports the participation of patients, caregivers and advocates in its work.
  • Provide input on how PQA can provide information about quality medication use to patient, caregiver and patient advocate communities.
  • Support PQA’s outreach to patient, caregiver and patient advocate communities.

The council will meet quarterly via online meetings each year. The expected time commitment is approximately 10 hours per year, including meeting time preparation and responses to occasional emails or surveys.

To support the council’s work, members will receive online training about PQA and medication use quality to support their participation. Patients, caregivers and advocates who participate in the council outside of their professional role are eligible to receive honoraria to support their participation and in recognition of their contributions.

The Council Appointment Process

The council will consist of up to 20 individuals who are patients, caregivers, family members or patient advocates. Members will be appointed by PQA following the nomination period that is open now. Individuals will be notified by December 22 of their status, and the 2026 meeting schedule will be established in January.

The council is open to individuals at PQA member organizations, other organizations and the public. Individuals, not organizations, are appointed to the council. Appointments are for a two-year term with the opportunity for extensions.

This information is also provided in a PQA Patient Advisory Council overview document

We are excited about establishing this new council, which will enhance how PQA incorporates the patient voice across our work.
