Our first in-person meeting in two years, this is a prime opportunity to reconnect with your fellow quality leaders and build new relationships.

This week, we are highlighting ways our members are addressing pharmacy deserts and considering the ways pharmacists can provide broader care for patients, improving medication use quality and overall health outcomes. If you have work you'd like for us to spotlight in an upcoming Five For Friday, send us an email!

Addressing Pharmacy Deserts

NCPA and the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy have formed a partnership to address growing concerns about barriers in pharmacy access, including closures. The Pharmacy Access Initiative will generate real-time information for national, state, and local policy officials, health care academics, industry leaders, and others to identify communities lacking in pharmacy access.

Leveraging Pharmacists to Manage Nation's Disease Burden
Pharmacists have an important role in improving patient health in their communities, writes FDS, Inc.'s Jason Ausili, but to reach their full potential, they must practice at the top of their licensure by expanding their services from just medication dispensing to chronic disease management, point-of-care testing, patient education, and medication therapy management. We should leverage pharmacists to help manage our nation's growing disease burden, particularly among the elderly.

Removing Barriers to Care through Community Pharmacy
Writing for Wired, Seguridad's Jake Galdo, says the PREP Act continues to change pharmacy practice. An August 2021 amendment expanded the authorization for pharmacy technicians to administer the influenza vaccine to any patient regardless of age, similar to Covid-19 vaccines. Legislators saw community pharmacies as a way to fill increasing health care gaps. The pandemic closed many health care practices and opened doors for pharmacies to step in.

Make Sure Your Organization Is Represented to PQA Leadership Summit
The 2021 PQA Leadership is November 10-11, in Arlington, Va. During the summit, we will engage our members in discussions on our next strategic plan, Blueprint PQA 2025. Make sure your organization is represented to:

      • Network and engage in person with fellow PQA members. From meeting sessions to meals, breaks and receptions, you’ll have ample time to reconnect with colleagues from across the nation.
      • Provide input on Blueprint PQA 2025, PQA’s vision for excellence that will detail the goals, objectives and key initiatives that will focus PQA's time and resources to advance medication use quality.
