Five for Friday December 16: Celebrating Success in Advancing Medication Use Quality

This year, PQA convened its members and stakeholders to advance our work on pharmacy performance measures and oral anticancer medication (OAM) use quality. As we move into 2023, PQA will continue to drive innovative measures and quality strategies.

PQA’s work to improve medication use quality is distinguished by its multi-stakeholder collaboration and consensus-driven processes. We’re excited by our progress on pharmacy performance measures and OAMs, and PQA and its members have the expertise and a demonstrated track record of developing nationally recognized measures with broad implementation potential. Learn more below.

We also highlight our members' insights on managed care pharmacy research, pharmacy performance measures and chronic disease medication adherence. If you have news you'd like for us to spotlight in an upcoming Five For Friday, send us an email!

Advancing a Managed Care Pharmacy Research Agenda

The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) and the AMCP Foundation (AMCPF) invited a sample of their membership to participate in focus groups to develop tangible research aims for each of the top two previously identified research priorities: generating real-world evidence (RWE) to support US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Accelerated Approvals and improving benefit design to address health inequities. The resulting research goals will serve to guide RFPs to strategic partners within the health care industry for funding of specific research projects to address these top priorities

Aligning Payment for Pharmacy Providers
Health Mart Atlas is participating in six quality-based performance programs that have positive payments tied to outcomes. These pharmacy-specific quality measures represent a tremendous opportunity to fully leverage the potential impact of pharmacists as a driver of value and outcomes. The programs, which span Medicare, Medicaid and Commercial plans, tend to be regional or state specific and focus on a variety of chronic disease adherence measures, as well as incorporation of med sync, and medication therapy management

Bolstering Chronic Disease Medication Adherence
The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy recently published a study on an integrated mobile healthcare program focused on patient transitions from hospital to home was able to improve the likelihood of chronic disease medication adherence for patients with lung and heart conditions. The University of Maryland Medical Center deployed its mobile integrated health-community paramedicine (MIH-CP) program, it focused on decreasing adverse health outcomes after hospital discharge by addressing the medical needs and social determinants of health (SDOH) of chronic disease patients

Driving Forward on Pharmacy and Oncology Measures

PQA is developing a set of standard pharmacy performance measures suitable for assessing pharmacy performance and for use in value-based arrangements (VBAs). In November, PQA hosted a PQA Convenes to seek additional input on high priority pharmacy measure concepts and provide updates on PQA’s work to develop and implement pharmacy performance measures.

Earlier this month, PQA hosted the first in a series of three national, multi-stakeholder workshops. The series will bring more than two dozen national health care leaders and oncology experts around the table to address:
  • Access and management of OAM
  • Performance measurement in oncology
  • Opportunities for clinicians and providers to improve OAM use quality

Ongoing stakeholder input is critical to ensure our plan remains focused on current, relevant priorities and addresses stakeholder needs. Organizations interested in supporting and participating in this initiative should contact PQA at [email protected].
